Minimum & Zero Liquid
Discharge

Many industries generate large volumes of concentrated wastewater, posing significant challenges for disposal or storage, often in evaporation ponds, and leading to severe environmental impacts. By implementing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technologies, these industries can manage wastewaters with high concentrations of total dissolved solids, as well as toxic and non-toxic chemical contaminants, more sustainably. In addition, brines containing metals and other dissolved species can be reclaimed or recovered as valuable minerals, salts, and reagents, turning a costly waste stream into a resource.

Industry is increasingly adopting a Minimum and Zero Liquid Discharge (MLD and ZLD) approach to improve circular water economy, recover valuable resources, and enjoy lower capital and operating costs at a fraction of a ZLD-only approach.

Gradiant’s MLD and ZLD solutions recover up to 100% of the liquid discharge, resulting in only solids for disposal or beneficial reuse. Our RO Infinity and Carrier Gas Extraction technologies are used for MLD to reduce brine volumes upstream of ZLD, thereby reducing the downstream crystallizers’ capital and operating costs. This combined MLD and ZLD solution results in significant Total Water Cost savings of about 60% versus ZLD alone. The high system recoveries reduce freshwater withdrawal and wastewater discharge requirements and create opportunities to recover valuable resources.

Our MLD and ZLD solutions offer the following benefits:

  • Minimize capital, operating, and total water costs
  • Maximize water recovery to achieve sustainability targets
  • Minimize freshwater withdrawal and wastewater disposal requirements
  • Recover valuable resources, including metals and minerals
  • Simplify construction and space requirements with modular designs
