The event was the largest global forum for lithium and battery raw materials &#8211; with end-to-end coverage of the industry, from supply chain risks to direct lithium extraction technologies to the latest battery recycling innovations. About 1,100 people attended this year, up 68% (from 650) of last year\u2019s event. The worldwide supplies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/electric-vehicles-scarce-parts-supply-chain-11668206037?st=nyujmkpcoany6hc&amp;reflink=article_email_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lithium and other key battery minerals<\/a> will not be enough to meet electric vehicle demand. Automobile manufacturers will need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/06\/05\/how-new-lithium-extraction-tech-could-help-us-meet-ev-targets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20x increase<\/a> in lithium supply \u2013 unachievable when relying on conventional technologies. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/lithium-producers-warn-global-supplies-225905308.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fastmarkets<\/a>, there were 45 lithium mines operating in the world last year, with 11 expected to open this year. This pace is far below what\u2019s needed to meet global demand and doesn\u2019t consider the downstream refining and manufacturing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6334a6c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6334a6c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1c31a03\" data-id=\"1c31a03\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aba4317 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"aba4317\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c45e5d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c45e5d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our main takeaways from the event:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Demand and Battery Chemistries.<\/strong> There will be strong demand for lithium-ion batteries in the current nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cathode chemistries. The share of lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) and sodium-ion batteries will grow as technologies improve. New projects are coming online, but not at a rate to keep up with market demand for EVs and Energy Storage Systems (ESS).<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Energy Storage Systems.<\/strong> While the need to supply for the EV market will continue to dominate, batteries for ESS will become more important. ESS reduce the imbalance between energy demand and energy production by capturing and storing the energy produced for later use. Fastmarkets estimates 20% CAGR through 2030 for ESS.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).<\/strong> Last year\u2019s introduction of the IRA requires automakers to have at least 50% of the critical minerals used in EV batteries come from North America or US partners by 2024. This creates pressure for manufacturers to build a supply chain in the US, leading to the development of alternative methods for mining and refining.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Directly Lithium Extraction (DLE) and Sustainability.<\/strong> DLE is becoming an important technology to unlock lithium trapped in underground brine, improve the recovery of conventional methods, and meet the requirements of the IRA to source from the US or its partners. DLE offers sustainability advantages in water use and management and lower environmental risk. Long-term agreements are starting to consider more than price and volume \u2013 where environmental permitting and community engagement are becoming critical to a project\u2019s success.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Battery Recycling.<\/strong> The market is looking to the recycling of lithium-ion batteries as the world\u2019s supply of lithium and battery materials face growing pressure. The industry is nascent as new technologies and recycling processes are being commercially proven. Watch this space.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-57c12c0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"57c12c0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-789e896\" data-id=\"789e896\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f81d6e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"f81d6e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e2ccb35 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e2ccb35\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4c9da83\" data-id=\"4c9da83\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7da8c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f7da8c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Lithium has historically been mined from hard rock or evaporated in massive ponds of brine from beneath the Earth\u2019s surface. The latter is a simple but inefficient process, requiring large areas of land, patience to wait 18 months for evaporation, and greater environmental risks.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">DLE is an emerging technology where lithium-laden brine is treated directly from the ground in a series of chemical processes and reinjected into the reservoir. DLE avoids the downsides of hard rock mining and evaporation ponds \u2013 handling and transport over great distances, long processing times, and environmental risks \u2013 to produce battery-grade lithium compounds in a matter of hours. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/uploaded-files\/Lithium_redacted-5c724b64-a6a2-4863-9ccb-ddcd92b56ed8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goldman Sachs<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"> has said DLE could do for lithium what fracking did for the oil industry.<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><br><\/p><p>Gradiant\uc758 <a href=\"https:\/\/gradiant.com\/ko\/%ea%b8%b0%ec%88%a0\/%eb%a1%9c-%ec%9d%b8%ed%94%bc%eb%8b%88%ed%8b%b0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RO \uc778\ud53c\ub2c8\ud2f0<\/a> technology enhances the DLE process\u2014 reducing time-to-market and environmental footprint.
